Creating Pages

One of the first questions of new users not accustomed to a Wiki in general or Pie in particular is: "Where is the button, link or gadget to create new pages?" The answer is: "There is none. You don't click and summon pages out of thin air." Well, you could, of course, but this is not the Wiki-way.

Usually, you don't create new pages apart and disconnected from other pages. Doing so would inevitably result in the new page being an orphaned page, that is, a page that is not linked to by an other page and thus can not be considered the child of a parent. In lieu thereof, you rather link pages directly from other, already existing, pages. Linking pages via hyper text links is a central dogma of all Wikis, much the same as it is in HTML.

The Top-Down Approach

To create a new page, you simply place a link to it on an other page. As for Pie, there is always at least one single page: the home page, also called MainPage. It is the root document of all other pages and parent for any number of children and descendants.

To place a link on one of your pages, you edit it and create an anchor. Pie's anchors are enclosed in double brackets. For strict page names, so-called Wiki-names, you can also omit the brackets as long as you use the native Wiki-name format.

Once your parent page has been updated and compiled, it will feature a clickable link to its new, yet missing, child. In this example, you called the new page MyPage and would now like to create and edit it. When you click on the new link, however, Pie will confront you with an inevitable error message:

Page MyPage could not be found.
To create this page, click here.

Don't give up, though, since Pie is neither unfriendly, nor impatient. It offers you just another link and, when being clicked, a form to compose the content of your new page.

That's the way it works. That's the way you create pages. And that's the way you make sure not to generate orphaned pages.

Deleting & Renaming Pages

To delete a page, click Edit and remove all characters from the page. Once you click Update you will be asked whether or not to completely remove the page from the server.

To rename a page, Edit it and transfer its content into your browser's clipboard buffer (»Edit»Cut), thereby emptying the textarea. Delete the page by clicking *Update*. After that, create a new page with the new name and paste the clipboard buffer.

_Deleting and renaming pages is dangerous because local and remote links do not get updated automatically, but simply stop working._
